Indonesian Vegetarian Recipes

Indonesia, a chain of large islands and peninsuale in Southeast Asia, is one of the most populous countries in the world. Ethnic groups from all over Asia mix to give Indonesian food an amazing variety of flavors and influences.

A hub for trading for centuries, Indonesian cuisine reflects Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern (Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country, which has a profound effect on the cuisine), and European flavors in its many rice and noodles dishes, especially favorites like rendang.

Many of the ingredients used in Indonesian recipes are similar to those used in neighboring Malaysia, Thailand and India. You will find an emphasis on coconut, curries, chilies, fermented fish products, candlenuts, herbs, as well as some indigenous sauces such as kecap manis and the ubiquitous sambal, or chili paste.
